Nokia N97 next to iPhone

Bell & Howell Filmo № 75

Hollywood has already accepted the reality of the “Twitter Effect.” Instead of cowering in a corner as Twitter ruins their box office, they’ve decided to give Twitter the full red carpet treatment and embrace it.

Stephen Bruno of the Weinstein Co. recently told the Baltimore Sun that, “I think Twitter can’t be stopped.” So he’s going to do something about it by taking a proactive stance. “Now you have to see it as an addition to the campaign of any movie … People want real-time news and suddenly a studio can give it to them in a first-person way.”

Eaamon Bowles, president of Magnolia Pictures, went on the record in the same piece to say that, “people will be twittering during the opening credits – and leaving when they don’t like them … the next step [for the Twitter Effect] is for studio marketing to manipulate it.”

Sei extrem

In a rebranding effort Grasshopper, an 800 phone number provider, spent months putting together a list of the 5,000 most influential people in the US. They sent each of them a care package with real chocolate covered grasshoppers. The end result was a barrage of mainstream media coverage and social media mentions.

Werbung an ganz neuen Plätzen

With more demand than ever, Jason Sadler’s IWearYourShirt initiative is flipping the advertising world upside down. In a nutshell, you pay for any day of the calendar year, send Sadler your swag, and the entrepreneur and his business partner will wear your shirt and chat up your brand via various social distribution channels like Twitter, Ustream (ustream), and YouTube (YouTube).

Coupons are not buzzworthy. The very nature of them makes them unappealing to younger generations of consumers who don’t want to deal with the hassle of coupon clipping. 8coupons is obviously hip to this fact, as they recently decided to take their discounts on the road, tap into the advantages of GPS-enabled phones, and leverage one of the hottest location-based mobile apps around — Foursquare.

Mommy bloggers are all the rage, and there’s been significant uptake when it comes to big brands turning to influential moms in creative social media marketing campaigns. Instead of repeating a common pattern, Sony, decided to put their products into the hands of dads, a relatively under-utilized segment in the social media realm, and empower them to tell their own stories using Sony products.

chilling

MicroStrategy claims its insights will help ATDW in a strong position to address the recommendations outlined within the Jackson report for actively driving growth in Australian tourism.

Currently over 150 websites access the ATDW content.

To the Future
EyeforTravel will use its two-day WTM conference on November 11-12 to focus on the increased role the mobile phone will play over the next 30 years of travel technology.

New global consumer research on the future role of the mobile in the travel industry will be released.

Mobile ist also "The New Big Thing"?

Hey! You with the Camera! Buzz Off!!
This evening, Facebook began fully promoting the new Twitter syncing tool via the top of Facebook Pages and are encouraging page admins to sync with Twitter. With millions of page administrators (which still appear to be a fraction of all users), this new tool promotion will also serve as a significant promotion for Twitter in general. At this point the service is well known but by launching the product internally and making people say “Why’d they do that?”, Facebook is in essence using Twitter to keep their own company honest.

Vielleicht ist dieses "link your page to your Twitter Account" eine "tödliche Umarmung"?

Audi Launches Facebook Campaign To Gain Insight Into Fans’ Ideas For Future Cars

Neo Gothic
Audi currently has more than 324,000 Facebook fans, one of the highest among car makers. The new campaign will use videos to reach out to those fans and ask for their input on what features they would like to see on future cars.

An emerging field known as sentiment analysis is taking shape around one of the computer world’s unexplored frontiers: translating the vagaries of human emotion into hard data.

This is more than just an interesting programming exercise. For many businesses, online opinion has turned into a kind of virtual currency that can make or break a product in the marketplace.

Twitter Badge (.gif)

But Twitter is developing an API specifically for third-party platforms like Tweetdeck and Tweetie first, so that the applications will be able to link a user’s latitude and longitude to their tweets. Biz touts the “cool” factor of being able to read tweets from people in your city or neighborhood to stay updated during an event like an earthquake (or even a cool concert), but the potential for geotargeted ads instantly comes to mind.

Quite a few people use Twitter as a resource for restaurant and nightlife suggestions during business and pleasure trips; a party promoter or restaurant owner trying to drum up business for the weekend could monitor tweets tagged with a specific locale and keyword and send drink tickets or meal discounts as @ replies.

The best way to book a holiday is on the internet, according to the majority of children aged five to 15 surveyed by YoungPoll.

JetBlue T5 Trial
JetBlue has more than a million Twitter followers, more than any other brand besides Whole Foods, the NBA and Zappos, according to trackingtwitter.com. News of the deal spread across the Twitter-sphere, and about a dozen websites and blogs, like wherewejet.com, have popped up to chronicle JetBlue adventures, share itinerary ideas and find cheap places to sleep. Traveler Jennifer Milano has even organized a New York City meeting to organize group trips; she says 20 travelers have committed to attending. To its credit, JetBlue may have started a social-media movement.

Madagascar, Foule-pointe

The idea was to use Twitter to take questions from customers, agents and others about the destination and make an interesting web event out of it.

I think they failed to capitalise on the potential of the event, but at least they are trying. Without making a few mistakes on the way we are never, collectively, going to learn what works and what doesn’t with Twitter (and/or realtime small tour operator event interaction).

Ticket Promotion der Airlines in Down Under für Twitter Followers

Jetstar Airbus A320-200 front, SIN
To promote its new Melbourne Airport to Sydney services, beginning on October 25, Jetstar released 10,000 free one-way flights on its Twitter feed at midnight on Wednesday.

Earlier, Tiger Airways had sent out a media release, embargoed until midnight, offering 30,00 Melbourne-Sydney fares for just $25.

Jetstar trumped this by instantly offering cheaper fares to its Twitter followers.

Facebook startet The Twitter Exporter Tool

This evening Facebook has announced the launch of the “Twitter exporter tool” for Facebook Page administrators. As Jaime Schopflin Hall highlights in an email to the press, “the tool allows Facebook Page administrators to automatically syndicate content and information they publish on Facebook to Twitter without leaving Facebook.com”.

DSC00531
By the way, for those paranoid conspiracy theorists who continued reading this post – in fear that I might be trying to hide something from them – here it is: I don’t think Google’s ultimate plan is to dominate the Earth. Google Labs already has a Sky Map for Android Phones and detailed maps of Mars’ surface… It appears their real agenda may actually be celestial domination… The good news is that it probably won’t happen until Web 73.0.

Bau Dir Deine eigene iPhone App in 5 Minuten

Wordpress Plugin for iPhone/iPod touch

Aimed primarily at small and medium-sized businesses without an in-house development staff, Sweb Apps is a new startup that lets you build a simple iPhone application using a series of web forms.

The upside is you don’t need any specific technical knowledge to build up an app quickly (the company touts “in as little as 5 minutes!”), but the downside is the app interface and functionality are relatively basic.

Still, for companies, individuals, or artists looking to put out an iPhone app quickly and for relatively little cost as compared to hiring a developer, Sweb Apps is worth checking out.

Travel Trends – Augmented Reality...

Augmented Reality Is What Is Next – ‘AR’ for short.  We certainly did not coin the term or even break the first story about AR, but the possibilities of AR seem to be an excellent answer to one of the more popular questions that Mo and I get asked frequently…so, what is next?

Honestly people, can’t you just be happy with Twitter?

Well, we have talked previously about the Semantic Web and it’s theorized implications on travel, but never about AR.  However, this post from ReadWriteWeb and video from the firm developing this nifty little app seemed like the perfect introduction of AR to our readers.  So, what is AR?  Basically, it is adding a layer of information to the real world (around you), using technology.  Watch the video, visuals help.

(Watching via email?  The video is also here.)

Pretty amazing, right?  If you did not watch the video, at least watch the first couple of seconds.

So, you can begin to see the basic idea…adding layers or data to the world around us via using GPS, your phone and a whole lot of information gathering.  But let’s take the idea of AR to the travel industry.

Augmented Reality (AR) - nicht neu! Früher hiess das Location Based Mobile Services.
